Edwardian terrazzo floor restoration in Hathersage

A recent job we completed on an Edwardian terrazzo floor that had been discovered under a carpet, it was located in Hathersage near Sheffield. We removed all the old gripper board and glue before cleaning the floor. There were a few cracks in the floor which are found in pretty much every old terrazzo floor but otherwise it was not in particularly bad condition.

The floor was cut back with 200 grit diamond pads and any deep holes and cracks were filled. We lightly polished the floor and sealed with three coats of a high quality water based sealer.

Sawn Indian sandstone cleaning & sealing in Sheffield

A few Pictures of an Indian sandstone we cleaned and sealed recently in Sheffield - Its a lot more interesting that the usual Indian sandstone we see. This floor has been made up of Indian sandstone which has been sawn, so its totally flat. This highlights the veining in the stone, as Indian sandstone is very colourful a sawn tile looks very distinctive.

The floor had an old sealant which looked quite patchy as well as the usual marks found on any natural stone floor - spill marks and some drag marks from furniture. We cleaned the floor and then used a 200 grit diamond pad system to take the last of the old seals off.

A colour enhancing impregnator was applied to the floor so it retained its natural matt finish - For any enquiries relating to Indian sandstone cleaning, restoration and sealing call us on 01484 686270 or email Info@barnsiderestoration.co.uk

York stone floor cleaning and sealing in Holmfirth

A good example of reclaimed York sandstone flagged flooring we have just stripped back and sealed in Holmfirth. York sandstone can be cleaned back repeatedly as long as the starting point is reasonably good. If the floor has been uplifted and cleaned outside (if it had been found in an old barn or house) thats helps - sandblasting in particular helps create the best starting point. Once a good surface has been created, as free as possible from bitumen and old coatings of paint it makes the floor easier to restore.

The worst thing to have to deal with is pretty much any floor that has been buried under concrete, levelling compounds and bitumen. Sandstone is very porous and will mark easily if hot bitumen is poured onto it. Being trapped under non breathable layers tends to make it soft and friable and is always more difficult to restore.

The floor pictured below is a York sandstone flagged floor which had been removed from the property around 15 years ago. The house was being renovated so the flags were cleaned outside then re-laid with a damp proof membrane fitted and underfloor heating. We have cleaned and sealed this floor before sealing with an impregnator - As the original starting point of this floor was a good one the process is always very successful.

Its a nice looking floor with lots of colour which is an attractive features of York sandstone flagged floors. The colours were enhanced with a colour enhancing impregnating seal which is a breathable product. Impregnating seals are applied then left to soak into the surface of the stone, the excess is removed after a few minutes. A good quality impregnator may only need one application, the cheaper ones require several - so a false economy. It leaves the floor with a 'matt' natural finish which is the best choice if the stone is in good condition with lots of colour.
